Originating in Tibet, these dogs were bred by monks in the Buddhist monasteries to let their owners know when someone has entered their homes. Lhasa Apsos were introduced into England in the early 1900′s by military men that were bringing them home from the Tibet region. The American Kennel Club first recognized them in 1935 and placed this breed in the Terrier Group. But, in 1959, after extensive research the breed was moved to the Non-Sporting Group.

In addition they have a keen sense of hearing which allows them the ability to be aware of noise prior to humans. These traits make this a great “watch” dog. They are also very suspicious of strangers and extremely loyal to their owners.
